Switchblade knives
A switchblade knife (that is also popularly called as an automatic knife or also sometimes as just a switch or a flick knife) is the kind of knife that contains either a folding or a sliding blade that is contained in the handle of sword. It is opened with the help of the spring when the button or the lever on the grip is pressed a little. Switchblades are the knives that are quite often given a lot of coverage by very specific laws—that are carried out at times when there is moral panic by newspapers and also movies regarding the usage of knife by criminals.
The respective knife is much controversial and has been around for quite some time now. The size of the blade and also its shape are like that of the average pocket knives with a few changes. As aforementioned you just need to press a button as a result of which a spring pops out. There are two basic kinds of switchblades knives. One is the kind that opens from the top whereas the other kind opens from the side.
The basic concept of these the respective spring loaded blades have been around for numerous years. Then in the months of the 1790s it had been modified and made into a better tool. Several early examples of the respective switchblades are traced back to either English or French.
Post the civil war that had taken place in America the knife production had been industrialized. That was the time when the American switchblades had made their debut. It had been named as the Korn Patent knife. But in the 1890s time period these blades had really become very popular and had even been sold to the ladies so that they could put them in their sewing kits. Then Italian makers also jumped in and it is owing to the switchblades that we have the Italian knives called the Stilettos.
Later on the street gangs had also begun using these knives and this is when the bad name for switchblades started. People had begun thinking that if they were banned then it might put an end to gang violence. The US congress had chosen to make the respective knives illegal. Hence during the sixties time period these switchblades that were being manufactured in America were only sold to the military and not the common people. Later on the knife makers found a way around the laws and started selling switchblades that were built-in in the kits themselves. The laws and the legality regarding these knives are different in every country. Several countries had banned them and still more made very strict laws regarding them.
